Five commissioners serving in the cabinet of Governor Siminalayi Fubara have resigned from the Rivers State Executive Council.

The commissioners are Prof. Chinedu Mmom (Education), Dr. Gift Worlu (Housing), Austen Ben-Chioma (Environment), Inime Aguma (Social Welfare), and Jacobson Nbina (Transport), who are all loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Prior to President Bola Tinubu`s intervention, nine commissioners, including them, had previously resigned in the midst of the state`s political crisis.
Two days after Fubara had criticized his predecessor and alienated his political godfather by accusing him of leaving a massive debt load on him, the two resigned.
Five commissioners from the Rivers State Executive Council who were part of Governor Siminalayi Fubara`s administration have resigned.

Among colleagues in the same cabinet, there is a loss of trust, hostility, and sharp division, which is unhealthy and very unfortunate." I wish your administration well and thank Your Excellency for giving me the chance to serve in your cabinet.
Ben-Chioma sent his letter dated the same May 15th shortly after. He mentioned that the state`s political turmoil was the reason behind his resignation.
I hereby tender my resignation as the Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, effective this day, May 15, 2024," the letter stated.

"Your Excellency, I genuinely thank you for granting me the privilege of serving on the State Executive Council. In addition to other personal factors, the political situation in our beloved Rivers State is the basis for my resignation.I consider it an honor to have served under your administration and I hope your term is filled with success. Likewise, Worlu stated in his letter dated May 15 that he was formally resigning from his position as Commissioner for Housing. This has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. It was sparked by the toxic environment that has pervaded our working relationship, particularly the smoldering arbitrary nature of decisions and acts, such as the attempt to combine the legislative and executive branches.

"I express my gratitude for the chance to be a part of your government and send my best wishes for your continued leadership of the state. Please accept my sincere regards` guarantees.
"I write to formally tender my resignation as Honorable Commissioner for Transport and member of Rivers State Executive Council with effect from May 15, 2024," Nbina added in his letter dated May 15.

The former Transport Commissioner said, "I thank Your Excellency for giving me the opportunity to serve our state, which I did dutifully and meritoriously. It has been a privilege to serve in this capacity."
He also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for intervening in the state`s political situation, which he claimed was causing apathy and a lack of trust.

As for Aguma, she announced her resignation from the governor`s office in a letter that appeared a few hours ago, citing the unfavorable working conditions there at the moment.
In light of the unfavorable work environment at present, I must submit my resignation as Rivers State`s Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, according to the letter.With a strong feeling of duty, I am leaving the company since there is no opportunity for growth or advancement.

Prior to Mmom, Worlu, Aguma, Nbina, Ben-Chioma, and the quintet, two more individuals tendered their resignations: Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and Isaac Kamalu, the former Commissioner for Finance.
Following Fubara`s directive that they be transferred to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor`s Office) and the Ministry for Employment Generation and Empowerment, respectively, Adangor and Kamalu tendered their resignations.
